I seem to have read somewhere that using Miracle Grow soluble fertilisers are not good for long term use on garden soils. They are only good for short term use as the residues damage soil structures and micro-organisms. Is this correct ??.

It doesn't really damage the structure or organisms per se.
It's more the long term use thinking, 'That'll do', results in not adding the organic matter that's needed to maintain good soil structure and thus good conditions for the micro-organisms.

I agree with cufcskim`s comments.
As well as cultivating your plants, it`s important to cultivate your soil and its micro organisms. You do this by incorporating home-made compost, well-rotted manure, or other organic material into the soil.
As soil gets better you`ll find you use less soluble fertiliser on the garden anyway.
Miraclegrow is very good for plants in pots and hanging baskets, and as a quick fix when plants are looking undernourished.

In addition to the above, which is spot on, prolonged use of soluble fertilisers can result in a build up of soluble salts in the soil.

I love the stuff and always treat me pots with it.
Have tried comfry soup before but it smells so vile - i would rather sick to the blue stuff.
glad to here is doesnt do bad stuff
Can i still call my self organic for using it? I don't use pesticides or fungicides on my edibles but do need to use Vine weevil killer in my pots or I would never have any plants in them

.
Hi,
The build up of salts from using fertilizers happened when farmers used to use (tons and tonnes) of fertilizer at the time when it was very cheap to buy!
Now they use it very sparingly because of the cost, no longer giving a bit extra for good luck!
One little packet or two, costing almost a fiver or so is unlikely to do much harm, so go give it a go!
Cheers!

I think that the main problem with using something like Miracle Gro for a long time is that it causes such a boost to the plant that it eventually exhausts it to death. Could be wrong of course, often am!, but that's what I'm blaming the death of some of last years pot grown plants on in lack of other evidence to the contrary.
