Seedling leaf in my cold frame look as though they have been cut off with scissors at compost level. Leaf is left uneaten. Could this be slug or mouse damage? I would have thought that slugs would eat leaf on the plant and not detach it and then not eat it.

It sounds like it could well be mice. I have the little critturs in my GH - and they are capable of doing a huge amount of damage. I have had to resort to (1) poison - which is never my preferred course of action, but sometimes necessary and (2) surrounding seedlings with holly leaves. It may just be coincidence, since I'm not sure that mice would be bothered by the prickles - but it does seem to work as a deterrent!

btw many years ago, I had a large coldframe, in which I stored part-used bags of compost. I put in some broad beans sown in individual pots - and every pot was dug up and the beans disappeared. I sowed a second batch - and later, when I went back to the compost bag, I found all the beans had been stored in a mouse "larder". Fortunately, I could see the funny side!!! smiley - laugh
