I am clearing some ground and finding what look like vine weevil larvae which I collect up as a treat for the chickens. It occurred to me that there may be other similar grubs that perhaps should be left in peace but searching the www has produced nothing useful; one description of VW larvae said 'no legs' but the ones I've found have small legs near the head end.
Does anyone have any better knowledge than I - or know of a good website that I could use?
Many thanks

In my experience vine weevil tend to curl round and hardly move when disturbed-there was a recent discussion here-go to message 8 posted by hereisabee and there is a link to a garden larvae website
I think you might find that will answer your question
if they have legs then they are not vine weevil larvae
thedogcody, really useful, thank you so much for your help. They are only 15 to 20 mm long but very likely early stage cockchafer larvae. Glad I haven't been doing away with the stag beetles that I've been trying to encourage for many years!
Just noticed a search box - will try and use that next time.
