I've just used an electric scarifier to de-moss and de-thatch my lawn, producing mountains of stuff that looks as if it should compost down alright if I mix it with enough relatively dry material. What do you think of trying to compost mossy material? Will it rot down well or not? Do I want to spread moss spores thtoughout the garden?

Yes, use it Steve. I add mine to my compost heap. Since we will never ever entirely remove every scrap from our lawns, that's where the new moss comes from.

Before consigning it to the compost heap, leave it somewhere dry in the garden and the birds will use some to line their nests. I'm sure they will be grateful. Cheers, Tony.

It is also good water-retaining material for hanging baskets and tubs of bedding plants.

I don't want to pour cold water, but I would advise NOT using it on beds / borders - the moss will never die off and will just come back. I speak as the owner of several depressingly mossy beds as a result of making this mistake! But the stuff is really great for lining hanging baskets, and yes the birds really appreciate it if you have an out-of-the-way corner you don't mind leaving it in for a few weeks.
