I've chitted my potatoes, but the potato tubers have gone green are these still ok to plant are should they be discarded?
Many thanks for your help.
It is the action of the sunlight that is turning them green. That's why eating spuds should be stored well away from sunlight. The green portion on spuds is said to be poisonous but as these chits are going into the ground it doesn't matter. Just remember about that for next Sunday lunch ! Cheers, Tony.
Thanks Tony, I know the cautions on eating green skin potatoes, the instructions are to chitt potatoes in light but it doesn't mention about the tubers going green, the last time I chitted the tubers didn't go green, hence my query.
Thanks for your reply and confirming the chitted green tubers are ok to plant.
I didn't want to plant the green chitted tubers if they are likely to produce green spuds.
Potatoes grow from the section of stem between the old spud and the start of the leaves. If you can extend this section of underground stalk there is more area from which the spuds willgrow.
This is ensured if you 'earth up' the ground but don't bury the chitted spuds too deep. Earthing up should be done gradually. Earthing up also ensures the growing spuds don't see the sun - and turn green.
If when you come to harvesting, you will no doupt get a half green, half brown spud and you will see the half that is green was above the soil surface.
Cheers, Tony.
