Hi there
Does anyone know the best time to prune them back, I have mine in a large pot and it looks like it started to come back to life. Also in the summer I hardly had any flowers on it, is that because I didnt feed it with some kind of acid feed?
Many thanks for any advice.
Jane
Definitely not now or you will lose this years flowers-leave it alone until later on in the year then return for more advice-quite often there is no need to prune
I basically agree with TDC
Up here in the north I leave my flowers on until the worst of the frosts have passed these offer a bit of protection to the new buds below.
The only pruning that might be required in about a months time, is to remove the dead flower heads, cut out any frost damaged branches to the nearest good bud and thats about it really.
If your shrub/s are getting out of hand wait till after flowering and tidy them up!
I have just removed last years heads and taken off a few branches that were making it look untidy. Other than that, I haven't done any pruning of existing branches, leaf buds are already out. It worked last year and I am hoping it will work again this year.
