Monty did a short piece on G/world last year about the problem of "white rot". I have the same problem on my allotment.
I have read recently in an RHS info paper about a method of control which involves soaking the ground with water infused with pulverised garlic or garlic powder sold as horse feed ( I am told by a horsey friend that it deters flies) This supposedly fools the dormant sclerota into germinating and when it fails to find a host plant dies

I intend trialing the method on my plot this year

Has anyone tried this? how effective was it?

I haven't tried it because thankfully I only ever had it once and I haven't used that bed since but I have heard of it.

Oddly enough I have planned my onion planting for that bed this year to fit in with my rotation plan.

It has been six years since I planted 'alliums' in that bed, so fingers crossed we do not get a cool wet summer.

A n allotmenteer on our plots digs his onion tops in each year to kid the disease into action and away from his following years crop! ( at least thats what he says he does, I haven't actually seen him do it!)

I was wondering about the garlic. It would be a little expensive to use 'edible' garlic. If I approach a nag basher for info on garlic powder, they should know should they? Cheers, Tony.

Hi, yes I agree that edible garlic would be expensive, although I did read in a discussion paper by Professor Fred Crowe, Oregon State University, that whilst garlic powder would work it was likely to be a bit less effective than garlic powder.
This paper makes interesting reading , if you were to "Google" it as I did I am sure you would find it.
