Hope somebody has some suggestions. I have a corner which only gets sun late afternoon and even then the corner won't get too much sun because there is a large bush in front. The gap behind has arisen because I've removed a dead shrub and some very old overgrown creepers - hence the empty corner!
So I need something which will grow to about five feet fairly quickly, not getting a lot of light/sun along the way - and if it's evergreen that would be a bonus.
It also needs to be something easily available - like from B&Q - cos I don't have much money or time to spend searching for something out of the ordinary.
Probably a tall order - but the people on this board are so helpful I know somebody will have the answer!
Thanks,
Una.
What about a Fatsia?
Thanks for that but I have a Fatsia already and it doesn't do terribly well.
Mahonia?
This thread was on the go a couple of days ago perhaps you can get some ideas from it;
I can recommend Viburnum burkwoodii. Here is a link with general information on this shrub.

You can prune it back hard if/when needed.
I've just remembered - pampas grass is the name of the plant with the plumes.
How would it grow in a corner where its bottom half is shaded from sun - does anybody know?
Thanks,
Una.
Hi Supernanauna,
Personally, I wouldn't plant a Pampass Grass in a shady corner. We have 2 Pampass Grass, one at either end of a large border (inherited in the house buy, and planted at the same time). The one on the right is huge, and gets full sun, whilst the one on the left is not even a quarter of the size of the big one, and is heavily shaded in the Spring and Summer by a very large Horse Chestnut Tree. I can only presume this smaller one is not growing properly due to the lack of light. I have, just last weekend, moved this small one to another area of the garden, where it'll get much more light, and we'll see what happens. I may be incorrect on this, but it's definately my experience. Good luck.

Have you considered a Hosta? There are many varieties so finding one you like should be possible. Many of them do not grow to 5ft or so though so you may have to do some research. I have several which do well in the shadw although as they were inherited I cant give you specifics!
1.Acuba japonica- the spotted laurel. Evergreen, in that has leaves all year round, but a not unpleasnt yellow spotted colour. So should show up well. It should easily make 5ft fairly quickly & can be pruned as nec.
2. Viburnum Tinus Eve Price- again evergreen, flowers & can be pruned ok. Any V.tinus would be fine.
With any new planting of shrubs you must keep well watered for the first year or so. J.

The plant in front (that i need to plant something behind) is actually a spotted laurel - about four feet high.
Will look up viburnum - haven't a clue what it looks like!
Thanks everybody for your suggestions - I knew I'd get some help on this board!
Thanks again,
Una.
