This is a bit tricky without knowing what plants you wish to put into the hanging basket-have you some idea?

I don't think there is a definitive answer to this one as it will depend upon the type of plants you are putting in, that is; how far do they spread.

    There are some pictures here of baskets I fill and on average there are around 12-15 plants in these small half baskets and half as much again in the mangers.;

A pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter (no convertion through choice) ! Can the attachments for hanging your baskets take that weight as well as the soil and plants? Cheers, Tony

Hi. Your baskets look lovely I have to say. Can you tell me what size they are so that I can have some idea of which plants to us and how many.

    I have three sizes of wall basket and they are as follows;

    12" x 7" = pics 3 & 4

    16" x 9" = pic 1

    22" x12" = pic 2

I use wall baskets because they do not dry out as quickly as hanging baskets!

Plus I think they are convenient for cladding walls & fences.

Thank you for your quick reply. Now, I have to make a list of plants I need, I intend to do 4 baskets so I guess it will be a bit pricey with all those plants, though I do have a few fuschias that have survived the winter in my unheated greenhouse,so I could use these for the centre of each basket.

    Regards. Biddy.

    Hi
    Being very new to gardening
I would like to know if only trailing should be used in hanging baskets ?.
Would non trailing petunias grow from the bottom and mlddle of the basket ?.
Any help or suggestions of non trailing plants to put in baskets i would be very grateful.

The ideal hanging basket is a combination of trailing plants for the sides and upright for the top so the actual basket is just a riot of colour .

But you do not have to do that.

Petunias will grow from the sides but upwards and outwards as is there their habit rather than trail-can look very attractive.

I have done baskets in the past just with impatiens but there may be a problem with supply this year

The key facts are feeding once a week or using a season-long granular fertiliser and watering at least once a day in hot weather.

    Give it a go

    Hi
Thankyou for you advice ( thedogcody )

I bought 7 of those easifill baskets with the removable gates ?
4 in the bottom 8 in the middle and room for 5 plants in the top

The reason i asked about the petunias is that i have been growing some seeds for the 1ST time this year and my biggest success is petunias and nasturtiums .
My mates at work reckon i could have thrown the seeds on the road and they would have grown smiley - smiley
Will try 1 of the baskets with all petunias see what happens and buy some nice trailing plants for the rest.

    Thanks again

    Mike .

You can also put some ivy in the summer basket the when you replant for the winter as I do leave the ivy in and fill the rest with viola the look great and add a bit of winter colour.

I know rules are made to be broken, but as a general rule, I would put 14 plants in a 14" basket. I use small plants, as they go through the wires easiest.
That is assuming it`s a wire basket. I wouldn`t use so many plants if it`s a solid basket.
When I make up the basket, I wedge in half a pop bottle, turned up-side-down.
This is to help watering, I water into the pop bottle, cos I`m a bit too impatient to stand there while the water soaks into the compost.

I wedge in half a pop bottle, turned up-side-down.

I place a piece of plastic ( ex- compost bag or similar) to form a saucer in the bottom of the basket, I have sometimes used a plant pot saucer to act as a reservoir.

Then I sit a vending cup or 4" plant pot on this then fill around it with compost.

Then like you and your bottle I use this as a water funnel.......simple!
