Have a 2 year old kilmarnock willow in a corner of my garden and have never pruned it. How do I go about this and when. Thanks
Should if needed be pruned after the tree has flowered, it is usual to remove damaged and dead wood, usually the latter is removed back to the crown of the tree, some gardeners reduce the lenght of the shoots if they are near ground level, this can be done but the pruned shoot usually shoots several times making the tree unbalanced.
As the tree becomes older then more and more wood dies back just remove it as needed, i have a client with one that is 30 years old and it is still a nice looking small tree.
After the catkins are over, prune out any very weak growth just above the graft. Then prune the remaining branches to two or three buds above the graft, and that's it.
Be careful not to damage the graft in the process.
