I have just cut back a solanum glasnevin that I have grown up a trellis on a fence. I knew it's best to cut back a third of the stems each year in March but as it was only a year old I thought I'd leave it alone last year. Bad decission! The stems have grown so thick through the winter that they have pushed the trellis away from the fence until it broke in many places! I'll now have to replace the trellis and I'm toying with the idea of digging up the thug! It's a pity to do that because the blossom on it is so pretty, but it had grown to tree size proportions, ie about 10-12ft tall. I did plant it where I used to keep a compost bin, so maybe the soil was so rich it got carried away! Anyone had the same problem?

Hello Doris, I looked up your plant,Solanum crispum" Glasnevin" in my RHS Gardeners' Encyclopedia and it states that this is a vigorous plant and will grow to 20ft. I think that is probably your answer! Could you perhaps just prune it ?

I wish I'd seen that before I planted it! I was hoping it would cover a large piece of fence, not take over the garden! Many thanks, a regular haircut seems to be the secret.

Doris - have a look at Solanum Album - in our garden it isn't as vigorous as Glasnevin and the flowers are very welcome at the end of summersmiley - biggrin
