My friend gave me seed of her poppies which come up each year from self sown seed. When should I sow these, and would it be best to start in a seed tray or scatter outside? The poppies are red with pinky middles and are frilly, but they are not double. They are much prettier than the lilacy ones that grow and the flowers are larger than 'field' poppies. Thanks for any help, Maggie

I hope you don't mind me intruding on your post?

I would be interested in the same advice. I was sorting out my seeds earlier today and came across some Poppy "ladybird" seeds and wondered when was the best time & where/how to sow them to get them started.

    Many thanks
    Anna

I would happily sow now, but I am in the sheltered south. Weeds are growing in my garden and that is normally a good indicator.

I would not sow in pots as mine did not enjoy being transferred. My biggest problem was that I did not thin them out so I got lots of small ones.

I agree - sow them directly. You can sow now - I sometimes sow mine as early as February here in North Yorks. They will germinate when they are ready - they prefer it reasonably damp (not soggy) to germinate.

We have 'freerange' poppies just coming through the soil surface so I presume now would be about right. They are lilac in colour, doubles and frillies as well. That's why they have been allowed to stay! Cheers, Tony.

Someone told me the poppy seeds like to have a frost on them so I sprinkled all the seeds I'd saved from friends & family, all over a spare patch of ground , back about September. I always think that if left to their own devices they would sprinkle their seeds when the heads are ripe, after flowering, so I believe in letting nature take it's course! I know that's a bit hit and miss, but I haven't been disappointed too many times over the years! One thing I have found is that they do not like being transplanted, so sow where you want them.
