Hi, I hope someone can help.
Over the past couple of weeks, this has appeared in my garden. The flower is quite pretty, but I'm thinking I should cut back or possibly dig up as I can see it becoming a nuisance if I leave it.
A friend suggested it might be bindweed, but having seached that, it is not the same flower.
Any suggestions?
Thank you
Vinca (or Periwinkle), possibly 'Gertrude Jekyll'. It is not a weed but a lovely spreading plant which can become invasive. Can I have some please?
The only thing to remember about this is that it'll root where it touches the ground, so don't ignore it if you don't want it to spread. Cut it back after it's flowered if you want to, but it's a nice ground cover.
Thank you so much for all your help. I'm so glad I looked on here before taking my friends advice. If anyone is in south devon, I'm more than happy to share!
Thanks once again
Liz
Hi Liz,
Vinca is a great 'freebie' plant. It'll spread its runners from the mother plant, which you can then cut off from her, once it's rooted elsewhere. Lift it, move it to another spot, chop it, it'll keep going. I have the evergreen varietgated variety with bluey/purple flowers and I've found it to be a valuble gap filler, and it's creeping it's way nicely over the big ugly waterfall (inherited) in this garden, which is exactly what I want it to do. I haven't seen one with the little white flowers, but its very pretty. Good for a flowering foliage plant in mixed pot displays too. Enjoy your freebie!

Hi Liz,
You are saying that the plant appeared in the last few weeks. If this is Vinca it should have been visible throughout Winter, so I'm a bit confused.
Do you have another foto of the whole plant?

It looks as though this might be some sort of potato-vine. Looks nothing like a vinca to me!
