We live in a council bungalow & maintain the front grass ourselves but I noticed last year that it had alot of moss in it & when I looked at it the other day & noticed that it has even more this year. We do use a lawn rake on it but because we suffer with joint problems this is becoming more difficult to do, can anyone recomend anything we can do that's not to expensive or to drastic
You can buy a moss killer that you water onto the moss, but you will have to rake it out afterwards. You can also get combined moss killer, weed killer and food that you can spread. Have a look in your local garden centre or B&Q.
Gat a bag of Lawnsand, which is fine sand mixed with ferrous sulphate, and sprinkle it finely over the lawn. If you have a small lawn a box should do, costing arround £3 - £4. For a bigger area buy a big bag (20kg or more, costing £10. Do it when rain is expected, otherwise water it in within a day.
After a few days the moss will have gone black. Rake it out (it should come easily) and bin it, and in April sow some grass seed on bald areas. (Rake over the soil first to loosen it so that the seed can get a foothold when it germinates, and sprinkle some compost over the top to stop birds scoffing the lot. Water it daily for 10 days, until the seed germinates.
