I'm a sucker for the inexpensive plants & bulbs in the super market and today I bought "summer flowering red blend" consisting of Dahlia, Gladioli, Crocosmia and Anemone
I'd like to put the dahlia in a pot and the others in the border. Is it ok to plant them now? I'm sure I've read somewhere recently that it's a bit early to plant dahlias. Is that right or was I dreaming?
I planted anemone last year and seem to remember soaking them in water overnight before planting????
I'd like to give them the best start possible and would appreciate any advice.
Dahlia-far too early to go outside-but now is a good time to start them off inside, you can plant them out when all chance of frost has gone
The rest should be ok

Super! Thank you
What about the anemone do I soak them before planting?
Sorry forgot about that bit -yes overnight
The thing to remember with all of these things is that they are likely to have dried out a bit in the supermarket - make sure you water them well once planted.
Thank you

I had thought they might be a little neglected hence the reason I wanted to give them as good a start as possible. I only paid £3 for a mixed bag of 21 bulbs & tubers so even if only a few survive I'm quids in.
Can you tell us which supermarket

Amazing, can't wait to check it out!
Thanks Tattianna.
Hope you manage to get some Jo W & Kate1123. There weren't that many left in my local store yesterday.

Depending where you live it's still a little early to be planting your gladioli straight into the garden.
If you have a GH they can be planted in pots, in succession from mid March to ensure a continuity of flowers throught the summer months.
Once you do plant them out, let the foilage grow throughtout the summer after flowering until the first expected frost then lift and dry the bulbs. They'll then need to be stored in a frost free place over winter - I kept mine in the GH this year.
Pound stretchers have a good selection of bulbs, tubers and corms, I bought a couple of hosta's today for £2 but the dahlia's were ever so tempting
hi i am a new gardener as well and i have found in the £1 store they have some realy good bulbs in fact they have a good selction and what i got last year did fantastic x
Morrisons is always worth a look for bulbs, bedding plants and shrubs. At the moment ours has various shrubs including a selection of clematis at £1-79, which are certainly worth a try.

I've been to Morrisons this morning and they have their "garden center" set up outside with lots of goodies on offer. I made myself practice the art if patience (not something I'm known for) before rushing in and buying on impulse. So I've come home to look up a few things and will go back later
