I removed some turf last Autumn, to make way for 4 raised beds, which I will be filling very soon, so I can start growing my own veg. Most of it was placed upside down in Dalek Composting Bins, while the remainder went in black binbags. Unfortunately, it has not rotted down very much, and I need at least one of the Daleks back for my composting needs. As my council will not take it, due to it's soil content, and I don't have room to create trenches, can I put it [upside down] at the bottom of my raised beds, and allow it to compost down that way? My beds are 18"-24" deep.

Yes. You may get the odd problem if there is any couch grass (twitch) in it or any other really persistent plants that start up from bits of root, but otherwise it's a shame to throw away perfectly good soil.

Your mistake Bob was covering the sods. The way is to cut the sods lift then turn upside down and place in a corner of the garden behind a bush or something, out of the way. Stack it up one on top of the other and leave, the air and drying out will do the rest for you. I have done this often and ended up with lovely crumbly soil.
Yes lay them in the base of your beds with the drier ones to the outside edges and get the nrest out of the bins, if you have room for bins you have room to stack some turf..
    Frank.

    Hi Frank,
Oddly enough, when I first removed the sods, I did start putting them in the corner close to the raised beds. But they were taking up too much room, so the Daleks & bags came into play. I will now do as you advise and empty them, also putting some inside the structures. Thanks again, Bob

    Hi Joe,
I have put a small amount of the broken down turf inside the beds, but based on your caution about some re-rooting, and the advice from 'Frank', to put it all out in the open in a heap, I am going to allow the elements to continue breaking it down.
    Thanks for your advice, Bob
