I have a clematis 'Mrs Thompson' growing in a big pot and would like to move it into the garden to grow up a trellis. I want to know the best time to do this and any tips to help me keep it alive. It already has some big shoots on it, and I may have to cut it back a bit as it's growing through an obelisk. Can anyone help please?
in a pot now, is a good time would plat deeper to avoid dreaded wilt though!
If it;s in a pot you can plant it any time that you like - now is fine. Try not to prune it too hard as they don't really like being pruned heavily.

There should be no problem planting it out, as it's potted, you can do it anytime.
'Mrs Thompson' is group 2 so doesn't need much pruning, but there will be no long term harm done if you have to hard prune it, you'll lose the early flowers this year but it will probably flower later in the summer.
Water well before and after planting out. Plant it deeply, as suggested, unless you already did that when you put it in its current pot.
Thanks, yes I planted it in a very deep big pot, so I'll give it a try.
