Can anyone give me any advice with regard to a potted Mimosa Plant that I bought for my Mom last year. It was in full bloom and really beatiful but this year although there are some small new leaves sprouting, the buds are starting to form but then just go dry and drop of together with some of the larger leaves..
Someone told me that Momosa kept indoors only keeps for a very limited time. Can anyone please help as this plant was really, really espensive and I would hate for it to die.
Thanks, Kate
I know two different plants that are commonly called mimosa. I am going to assume you are referring to acacia dealbata.
I`ve never had one at home, but I looked after one at work, in the greenhouse.
It`s tender, so in winter the temp should not fall below about 7C.
It likes compost on the acid side, but also to be free-draining. It is important not to over-water it, especially in winter. Ours seemed to thrive on a bit of neglect.
Our plant didn`t have the problem of its buds dropping off, but I think that`s because it lived in the same conditions as some potted gardenias, that is the air was warm and moist, the compost acid, and it was not watered with tap water, which can be alkaline.
I know gardenias drop their buds if the air is too dry, or if they are watered with tap water.
I`m guessing (an educated guess ) that acacia dealbata could be the same.
It`s worth a try anyway.
Hope this helps.
Thank you so much, I will water only when it is really dry and will, from now on, not use tap water. Many thanks, kate
