I sowed aquadulce last october and they started very well and reached about 9 inches in height then they started to die back with some getting blackened stems, I know the frost seen a few off a couple of weeks ago but I have never had a crop of beans fail yet. There is no sign of any insect or fungus, I am concerned that I applied some manure from a local stable and have read somewhere that some manures could contain weed killer that actually passes through the animal, if this was the case would the beans have grown in the first place?
If it was the compost the beans would have been deformed or stunted, I think. In your case the blackening stems sound like a fungal infection, but I don't know which one.
If you just nip across to the grow your own message board you`ll see that this question has recently been answered on there.
Hereisabee gave a good reply, saying that if planted too early, the seedlings grow too tall before the frost comes, and they get damaged.
S/he showed pics of how tall the seedlings should be.
