I wonder if anyone can help. My daughter planted a Jasmine last year (outside) and was saying she thought it had died as the leaves were all brown but when I looked at it the stems are very green and healthly looking. Is this normal? Should she just cut the leaves off. I've never had a Jasmine so don't really know anything about them. Any help would be appreciated.

Wouldn't worry -mine is exactly the same and it has been in for 5 years and has survived those winters-the stems are green the leaves brown-it will come back.
No need to do much at all -just wait.

Which sort of Jasmine are we talking about? The winter flowering jasmine with the yellow star-like flowers, or the highly scented white-flowered summer flowering jasmine?

I'd be surprised if a winter-flowering jasmine had anything wrong with it - it's pretty hardy.

The summer-flowering one can be a little tender (depending on where your daughter lives) and might have succumbed to frost in the recent cold snap, but if the stems are green and healthy looking it's probably going to be fine. It might lose the tips of the stems and send out new shoots from lower down. If this happens she can trim off the dead tips when she can see where they end.

I wouldn't worry about doing anything with the brown leaves. As new leaves grow this spring the old ones will fall off - she can gather them up and compost them, or let them rot down on the soil. I'm not aware of any awful lurgies that attack jasmine, so I doubt if they're carrying any disease which would mean they should be burnt.

Thank you so much for your replies. I'll pass on your information. She will be pleased to know she hasn't lost it.

Inajam, I'm not sure but I think it's the white summer flowering one. She lives in Bedfordshire.

    Thanks again.
