Hello everyone, I have a small paved and walled courtyard and would like to have some climbers growing up the walls. Does anyone know if it's feasible to grow a wisteria in a container and if so, what the minimum size the container would have to be? I'd be grateful for any ideas. Thanks.
Yes it is. I have seen quite a few. I'd suggest a pot with a 20" diameter or more. Make sure you leave a couple of inches at the top to make watering easier. And use a John Innes No3 compost (not multipurpose with so called "enriched with John Innes"!). It will be well worth it when you consider the cost of the wisteria).
I tried growing wisteria in a pot up a trellis. It seemed to do OK for a few years but never flowered and was not very interesting. I moved it into soil against a fence and it just took off. I trained it along wires and it started to flower and has been magnificent for 20 years.
If you only have a little space, try something else or grow the wisteria as a "standard" like a big umbrella. Thay can look spectacular, but don't waste years on a wisteria that isn't happy
