Oh dear, how can we tell? Perhaps you can let us know in about three months time.

Bernadette,
Willows will generally cope with pruning, but you will probably have to wait and see how the shape grows out this year and then adjust it later. Depends a bit on the species.

Hi,
I have a corkscrew tree. Last year I was going to dig it out & cut it right down to about two feet from ground level. I went back to it a few weeks later to finish the job & found it was sprouting again. It is now a much better shape and has won it's reprieve! You can so easily strike cuttings from this willow too.

We did the same in March last year and it recovered and looked thicker and healthier. Ours went from 40ft to 20ft. and even survived the bad weather. Our tree surgeon said it's almost impossible to destroy one of those, so don't worry.
I chop mine back (the corkscrew version) every Spring, just after it starts to try and leaf. I render it back to the appearance of a smallish telegraph pole, and within 2 months it is again covered in wonderful bright orange twigs, which go on to bear lovely light green leaves all year. In the winter the bright orange branches are stunning, especially today when the upper sides are covered with snow. Have been following this regime for several years, and it is still looking gorgeous.
