    Hi,
    I have a new 'regular shaped' city garden and am starting from scratch trying to populate the boundaries first, before moving on to feature and decorative plants. I was wondered if I could get some advice on suitable evergreen backgound shrubs / hedges. Ideally I'd like to plant both sides (west facing and east facing) to provide interest throughhout the year, but I'm not sure where to start. The soil is fairly heavy and I'm in the northwest, so it's also quite damp.
    Any tips would be gratefully received.
    Ta

    My top tip is to sort out your soil, so much easier at this stage, for £20 you could probably buy lots of horse manure.

    I have an evergreen clematis that I would recommend, not sure if you have hedges or fences? Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' .

    Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n' Gold' this is my good 'doer' plant, takes everything thrown at it.

    Here are some evergreens that I`ve found useful;

    Photinia red robin, choisya ternata, pieris formosa forest flame, viburnum tinus, camelia, rhododendron, ceonothus delight, garrya elliptica, juniper sky rocket.

    There are hundreds of shrubs to choose from, so this is one of those questions that it`s difficult to answer in a satisfactory way, simply because your personal choices might be very different to mine.
    Also It depends what size area you wish to fill.
