I live in quite a built up area and over the last 6 months or so there have been many very mature trees taken down for one reason or another, I think usually because of danger to the public, which is fair but the trees are not replaced with anything not even a shrub. I get quite worried as I know the quest for as much light as possible in our homes is important and also public safety too, trees just keep being taken down and they take so long to get to maturity it seems tragic to me that they can come down in a short space of time.
My thoughts were that maybe Gardeners World could do an ariticle or two on how we as gardeners, home owners etc can grow trees that are small, easily kept and maintained, would fit into small modern gardens, and bring back wildlife which obviously just disappears when a tree is taken down. I know there is cost involved in buying trees and shrubs but a little challenge really.
I have a large garden and am surrounded by large mature trees so am lucky but I still worry about the area I live in and how trees play a major part in our lives but can be lost so quickly.

The same thing is happening to our trees, here, in the northeast - a full street of mature trees were cut down. Dreadful IMO. I think its got more to do with council cutbacks. Also, my local parks shrubs and trees have been subjected to a severe pruning and I fear some shrubs/bushes will not recover.

    DJ,

I guess we all know of streets called something like Oak Avenue, where the oaks were felled to build it or, even if they were retained, the householders have subsequently decided that the trees are a nuisance and have had them felled, either legally or illegally.

It might be interesting to have a word with your local council's Tree Officer about some of your particular cases.

I would think by the number of people that ask for suggestions of small trees on this message board that it would be an interesting topic for GW. I do not think that the production team read these boards, though MD obviously loves trees and I seem to remember AT bought some land just to plant trees on.

I'm aware of many private householders who have had large trees cut down.

I think there is some desire to 'modernise' properties, and a fashion for 'open plan' gardens. But it is just a fashion.

During the 1960s there was a fashion for modernising houses. Many years later people have come to realise that was a huge and expensive mistake.

Once a large tree has been cut down, it cannot be replaced, for generations.

If a large number of trees do get cut down, then it changes the character of a district.

We have two relatively large ash trees in our smallish garden; previous owners had lopped some branches and the trees were misshapen and branches were overcrowded.
When we moved here we had some of the branches (less than 30%) removed by a qualified arboriculturist to allow more light through and to remove any disease - the result is a delight, beautiful trees full of birds and enough light in our garden to grow fruit, veg and flowers and a source of free leafmold in the autumn.
It wasn't cheap but it would've cost us much much more to have them removed and the garden would have been the poorer for it.

So often people think the only answer is to remove the tree smiley - sadface

Thanx for your reply, is there an e-mail address for MD or AT do you know, I could possibly do that and see if they are interested.

Thanx for reply, I agree that the whole area changes when trees are taken down, I look around where I live and the views change, light, plantlife everything and yes trees take so long to mature that years are lost in just one felling. I have to say I do get upset when I see one cut down. I live near several schools and they have removed trees, shrubberys etc because of danger to the public, fair do's but also to prevent vandalism etc, if only they would plant another tree where it would be safe on the school fields, they have so much space, they could but they don't. Well maybe i can come up with a plan...I think the Woodlands Trust were giving saplings away for the Diamond Jubilee to encourage planting trees.
I think that some shrubs are as effective as small trees and can be easily managed, encourage wildlife and have flowers or fruit for interest. It is getting the word out there and the media is the best way.

Sorry, I do not have their email addresses, both of them write newspaper columns and I think MD is on twitter, I rather assumed that you would have to go through 2 assistants to get anywhere near them.
