hi,i"m new to gardening & need advice.my back garden was completely slabbed with 6ft fence all around so we decided to put a bit of life back in it.so i"ve took the slabs up at bottom of garden ,put my shed in corner & made a garden bed with railway sleepers.i"ve planted clematis along the fences & i"m left with a 8ft by 6ft patch but i dont want grass .so any idea"s of a colourful ground cover would be much appreciated.my sleeper bed is only one high so the ground cover has to be low growing,,thanks

Can I suggest Thyme, you can walk on this and it is evergreen. You could mix in some other herbs for variety.

You do not say what your soil is like or if the bed is in a sunny position.

    Hiya,

I'm quite new to this myself but i've grown thyme from seed no problem, just make sure you put them outside when they are still small as for some reason the growth was stunted for mine compared for when they were outside even though i was told it shouldn't be.

If you want to put seeds down right onto the ground jut make sure you protect them from birds smiley - smiley

Also, you might be able to pick up some big thyme plants from supermarkets cheaply if they have some that have reached their sell by date.

Ajuga is another possibility as it comes in several colours, including pink and silver varigations. You would have to buy it as plants, but they grow fast.
If you want more flowers, then how about perennial geraniums?

    Hi ,
You could try some wild flowers which are becoming very popular this year as they are good for bees, butterflies ,etc, and can be full of colour.
There are lots of seed mixes around. Look on the web. Or you can make up a mix of your own, which is what I am trying this year.
Sarah Raven made 3 programmes about them a few weeks ago, and the results were very impressive. It also saves on maintainance.
They won't however be low growing, but does that matter?.
Might be worth a try. Good luck.
