I have frogspawn and toadspawn as of today - 3rd March. I have never had both appear on the same day before. Usually my frogs spawn at least 10 days before the toads. I am in Essex. I'd be interested to hear of others' experience.
Hello i have also had frog spawn float to the top of the pond this morning and there are some clusters at the bottom ready to come up, i have hooked out the stuff floating on top just in case my koi eat them. I have also had to turn the pump off as there is some right near it.
Pondman, you have solved a mystery. I have been wondering where all the frogspawn keeps disappearing to each year and you say the Koi eat it. What do you do with what you have taken out? Just wondering what I could put it in.
Yes unfortunately koi eat just about everything, but i try to spot it early and hook it out with a net. Last year i put the clusters in a square net that floated on the pond these are used to breed fish however it contains the spawn and the koi cant get at them however i found once the eggs hatched and they turned into tadpoles i noticed Blackbirds and Magpies feeding there and i have heard that newts, water boatman and dragonfly nymphs so this year i have put them in a normal bowl well 2 bowls as there was quite a bit of it with a high net over the top to keep the birds off.
Thanks for the info Pondman. I was told last year not to disturb it so left it and it disappeared! Will do something about it this year - when it stops raining. Did take it out one year and put it in a kids paddling pool, with water from the pond and it was doing fine until it got emptied out because someone was more concerned that the grass would be dying. The culprit nearly suffered the same fate!
Loads more frog spawn 27 clumps at last count but no more toadspawn - I think one pair of toads just couldn't wait - and hopefully the others will spawn the traditional 10 days after the frogs.
This is the only time of year that a gry heron visitd my pond and I am keeping an eye out for it so I can set up my water scarecrow to protect my love crazed amphibians!
I also have several clumps of frogspawn here in Bedfordshire. Just waiting now for my midwife toads to start 'beeping'. I'm not sure if they actually spawn in my pond but they were definitely in the garden last year and the year befopre.
