I have a garage wall that I would like to cover, it is the old pre-fab sort so drilling into it is simply not an option so my only real option is a self clinger. I do like the look of the Persian ivy but I have my reservations due to the invasiveness of ivy. Is this variety ok for controlling and keeping to an area? It is also a north facing wall with heavy clay soil... Will it be ok in this location?

I wouldn't - Persian ivy is very vigorous. Last year we moved to a new garden with boundary fences covered with various varieties of ivy. Within a month the fences fell down in the rain due to the weight of the wet ivy. As well as having to replace the fences, the brick footings under the wall have all had to be rebuilt (at a cost of several thousand pounds) because they had crumbled as the ivy roots had sucked all the moisture out of the mortar. The builder cut though ivy roots as thick as his wrist (and he's a well built chap). We are still digging huge ivy roots out of the borders and spent a considerable amount of money getting the ivy out of the mature trees in the garden. Our neighbours are thrilled that we're tackling the ivy at long last. Theyve been battling the invading ivy from our garden for the last 15 years.

I think I'd plant Hydrangea Petiolaris - it's self clinging, does well on a shady wall, and although it'll take a couple of years to get going it, once it does it'll cover the wall, producing gorgeous creamy flowers in the summer and wrens and robins will nest in the thick leafy cover, and in the winter the chestnut coloured tracery of the bare branches on the wall looks amazing.

Further to my last post on this thread - I'm digging a veg patch in the new garden - the ivy roots spread under the lawn at least 10ft out from where the ivy covered fence was!!! Beware!!!
