Hi all, i'm new to the forum and was hoping you could give me some planting ideas for the bottom half of my garden.
Pics...
They currently have winter field beans growing in them which will shortly be cut down and dug into the soil ready for planting in mid March.
I would like a fairly 'modern' type look with ornamental grasses and some climbers to cover the fence, i do also like the red hot poker plants. I can widen the borders if need be but would rather not if it can be helped
Really i'd just like it to look nice and tidy and to be a nice area for my little girl to play in...
If it is south facing I would plant lavender, north facing Ox eye daisies. Hebes are low maintenance, mine have lovely pink flowers. Crocosmia are good for poor soil.
My red hot pokers do not flower for very long. Have you considered daylilies?
I have a clematis 'freckles' evergreen and winter flowering.
For your daughter I would plant sunflowers, to encourage an interest in gardening.
Many thanks for your post,
If you look at pic 1 the left side is south facing
Hi, let me see if this is what you mean by "modern".
choisya ternata, arum italicum "pictum", cordyline, hostas, lilium regale, pom pom dahlias, helleborus, bergenia, hardy geraniums, lupins, climbing hydrangea, helictotrichon sempervirons (perennial oat), cornus alba "elegantisima" (red-stemmed dogwood)
Or does "modern" mean "wild-flower meadow"?
Thanks for the suggestions, I'm liking the majority of them. As for planting I'm hoping to get a bit of height against the fences to screen it. Am I better growing a climber or two or tall shrubs/plants or maybe even both?
Would you suggest widening the border in the sun to accommodate a thicker border?
I would always go for a wider border.
You will need to decide how much maintenance you need to do, shrubs tend to be low maintenance but a little boring. Plants/climbers will need a bit more care. I would go for a mix and then you can decide which you prefer.
I think I will add an additional foot to the width of the borders. I would like a combination of plant types but I'm not sure on how to arrange them so that they are positioned in the best place.
Definitely going to go for some ornamental grass at the front then some lavender and the odd climber up the fence but would like something in between?
