Hi everyone - it feels like ages since I've been on the site.

I have a little question smiley - smiley I bought two individual hyacinth bulbs meaning to plant them into little mini pots for cuteness. I didn't get round to buying the pots though and wondered if they would survive in water. So....I popped each on top of a glass filled with water so that only the base of the bulb was touching the water and wow - within a week - the tiny dried up roots have exploded into masses of thick juicy tentacles smiley - smiley

...but will they actually flower with only water for nourishment?

Yes for one year only -the embryo flower is in the bulb-this is the sort of thing my granny used to do a for Christmas presents-after flowering either throw them away or plant in the garden -it may take a couple of years at least for them to flower again.

Oh that is so exciting - and they look quite smart in their glass. I'll enjoy the flower and the scent this year then - and I'll plant them out afterwards. Thank you 'thedogcody' smiley - smiley

I was planting out some spent bulbs from the house and remembered the advice I got in December:

All this from water smiley - smiley

Thanks again and they did smell heavenly
