I would love to have some of these in my garden but I'm not sure if they could cope with the conditions. The whole garden is hot and and dry, with only a little shade. Has anyone out there got experience of how much these plants can take?

Go ahead and buy,the plant will thrive in said conditions. You must take time out to look at the plant in wet conditions, the way it holds water drops is fantastic.(new growth in springtime especially so).It will self seed ...I`ve unearthed and moved many small newcomers without fuss. They grow quickly too.
Enjoy.
My whole garden is south facing, no shade and with clay soil that bakes solid in about early May. The Alchemilla seem to thrive in these condition self seeding all over the place, I've learnt now to cut the flowers off as soon as they fade.
Hi
In my experience Alchemilla Mollis will grow very well almost anywhere! I have some in deep shade, some in open South-facing beds, some in a very wet boggy part of the garden and even some growing through the tar in my driveway! All of them are thriving in their respective places and all of them self-seed prolifically!
I was told they like shade, but I cannot get them going in my shady garden. They are still alive (barely) but have never flowered. So I would say go ahead and plant them - I imagine they will thrive as long as they have enough water
Thanks for all the comments! It sounds like they'll do fine in my garden. Now all I have to do is find some to buy....
If you can find a neighbour with some Alchemilla Mollis. I am sure they would be more than happy to give you a root - they self seed like mad and once you have them in your garden you will have them for life. I love them!
Are you in the south east?
If so I have them self seeding everywhere and would be delighted to give you some.
Thanks for the replies. Auntiemand thanks for the offer! I do live in the South East but a little far from you as it's the South East of France! Funnily enough, alchemilla is featured in a plant catalogue that came in the post today so I know where to get some now...
