    Morning all,

Is there merit in growing winter bedding from seed in cells etc? Also, by what date will the bulk of the sowing need to be done?
I went to my local store and they had no seed packets for plants which flower over the winter months which makes me think that there isn’t a market for them?

    Thanks in advance

There isn't an enormous number of annual flowers that will bloom during Winter.

There are so-called 'Winter flowering' pansies.

The recommened sowing time is July-September for Autumn planting.

They can look very very sad in bad weather. Whether they actually produce much of a show during the Winter, they will certainly produce a very good show througout the Spring and Summer.

I have just germinated my first batch of violas and will probably sow some more this week. They are 90% from collected seeds.

I will buy plugs/plants of winter flowering pansies at some time in October to supplement them .

Not sure what you mean by merit, I think most people sow seeds in spring and do not think about the rest of the year, I bought some seeds last week and they were half price at the till but no sign by the stand, even the big companies start to sell them half price in august as sales are so poor.

I have just germinated my first batch of violas and will probably sow some more this week....   Violas (which are effectively small pansies) are said to have better Winter performance than pansies, simply because their flowers are smaller, and less susceptible to damage.

    I haven't tried them myself.
