The item was advertised on Breakfast as a 'secret garden'. I'd imagined a small retreat tucked away somewhere. But they really meant 'secret' in the sense that the garden was generally unknown.

Some people don't like these big gardens. But, personally, I'm full of admiration for them.

And yesterday Â鶹Éç News was at Monet's garden, which has just acquired a new English head gardener, James Priest (whom we saw with Monty a couple of months ago).

This morning Kate Silverton made some remark about these gardening items being soooo relaxing.

And last night on the One Show was a live broadcast from Northumberland, covering a work by landscape designer Charles Jencks. This one:

That was very impressive too, in it's own way.

I'm a little puzzled by these postings. The impression being given is that Wrest Park is a new Heligan only recently come to light. But I visited there 5 years ago and everything being mentioned was there then. I would describe what's happening here as more a ' makeover ' rather than a ' new discovery.'

What I can say though is that Wrest is certainly unique amongst the many gardens I've visited.

It has three splendid buildings. 1) The Archer Pavilion (1709-11) by Thomas Archer is a delicious large domed baroque construction dominating the end of a formal canal. 2) The Bowling Green House is the best of its type you'll ever see and 3) The Gothick Bath House in the style of Thomas Wright is reached over a little bridge and is a real rustic gem.

But the reason for its uniqueness is the web of secret (and here is where the real secret comes in) boxed compartments containing statues and vases. This hedged wilderness, in an unaltered French style, is so intense one can easily become disorientated - and not care as it's so lovely.

I understand only Bramham Park in Yorkshire has something similar.
