hi everyone
i have heard you can get thornless climbing rose. does anyone know where
i can buy one,
Zephirine Drouhin (Barbie pink flowers) and rambler Veilchenblau (purplish small flowers) are reckoned to be thornless and are certainly easier to handle than the vicious horrors.
However, they have one or two thorns and they will get you because you handle them incautiously. If you set to the task of pruning a thorny beast you will get tooled up with gloves and gauntlets and approach with all the caution of a lion tamer with whip and chair, hopefully emerging unscathed.
My Zeph Drou is pretty much thornless. Amazing colour & scent but rather weak & disease prone.
Mortimer sackler has few thorns
Peter Beales' website has a very clever search, which is down the left hand side of the main page:
In the 'Family' box, tick - climbers
Then, in the 'Thorniness' box, tick - no thorns
It comes up with one rose - Kathleen Harrop, this one:
Alternatively, relaxing the search slightly, to 'not very thorny', gives you quite a selection:
You might learn why roses have thorns, my Zeph. is prone to slug or snail damage. It has taken years to get it established and it is beautiful in bloom. Without encouragement on this forum I might have dug it out, it looked quite weak when I moved to this garden.
