At long last the wife and I visited Geoff Hamiltons Barnsdale Gardens. After years of watching Cottage/Ornamental and Paradise Gardens on TV and DVD, we made the trip. It was fantastic to see the gardens for real and we weren't disappointed. They did appear smaller than on TV but to see Geoffs work up close aswell as many others gardens was a treat and will be definately returning at some point.
In about 2 years time you will be able to visit monty's garden once he has been kicked from GW.
Hope not. I like Monty, but then I've taken to all the presenters. From Geoff when I got into gardening, to AT, then Monty, Toby and then back to Monty. I love gardening and love watching gardening programs and have learnt and taken something from them all
Our daughter was married in Barnesdale. Lovely gardens and Geoff's son is a real gentleman too.
Just had to say how nice it is to read something so positive! I agree with you that all the recent presenters have had something to offer if you keep an open mind. And I too loved Barnsdale - it was fascinating to see all the TV gardens "in the flesh" and made me appreciate Geoff's real talent as a designer
Thanks. There's so much doom and gloom on the TV, its nice to switch on GW or Beechgrove. Whether its watching something i've done a hundred times or learning something new, i don't mind. It makes me smile when i see people on here complaining about camera angles and such. Lifes too short.
I'd love to vist some of the places mentioned on these boards, Barnside sounds lovely and couldn't agree more greensideup, about gardening programmes on TV .
Whose presenting a programme shouldn't matter, I'm very much a novice gardener and can't imagine being anything else even if I lived to a 100.
My visits have been confined to the local area, Leven Hall is nice if you like to see topray but it does nothing for me as I drive past regularly and the gardens in the Lakes can be breath taking, I'd like to see q.
I agree, Barnsdale is a beautiful place to visit....you can almost feel the presence of the great man himself.
Zoomer - Just for you here are a few pics I took during a previous visit.
I visited Barnsdale about 6 years ago and loved it ,id love to make areturn visit well worth it
Great photos David. I was going to put some pictures on but I don't think i would do it as much justice as yours.
As you said, you can feel Geoffs presence around the place. It actually felt surreal to me, as much a film set as a garden.

You're very kind, greensideup, but they were just taken randomly on a beautiful summer's day.
Thank you David the pics were much appreciated.
Barnsdale looks a super place to visit but a tab bit far for me even for the weekend. Shame there isn't anything closer to home.
Yes, it's a lovely place, once you find it! I thought it wasn't very well signposted but the effort was well worthwhile.
I was there about a month ago, on a hot day when all the blossom was on the trees and early spring flowers in full bloom. Not many other people about so I had the gardens almost to myself and it was wonderful. Spent about three hours just wandering around taking photos and planning to come home and redesign my small patch! That was one thing I really loved - most of the gardens were on a scale I could relate to, only having a 25m square garden myself.
Will try to go back, if I ever get the chance, at a different time of year.
