Oh!!! I am so behind in my gardening, I have been distracted by redorating my sitting room which seems to have taken a disproportionately large amount of time out of my life. What a dilemma - staying indoors to do some much needed decorating or spending time in the garden in the lovely warm April we have had, decorating won because of circumstances, but I have managed to plant most of my veg seeds and am seeing some seedlings emerge. As an inexperienced gardener I am confused whether they are weeds or actual young peas, swede etc. how do you know the difference? I am hoping for a warm summer (I'm bit of a reptilian person so only come to life in sunshine) so I can continue renovating our garden and see how the plants I planted last year flourish (hopefully) this year. It has been hard work trying to make a garden from a small budget and minimum knowledge, how do other people do it? I have a plan which then evolves into something else, is this normal? But spending time in the garden is one of the most rewarding things I do.
Speaking for myself Susie, if the sun is shining, garden wins every time. I have been in my house for 45 years now and my garden has changed many times over the years. Just when I think I am happy with it, I find something else to do and so it goes on. But that's what gardening is all about, don't you think. If we got it to how we liked it, there wouldn't be anything to do!! At the moment, having cut down a large fir tree, I now have quite a large, bare piece of ground, so I now have to decide what to do with it. Great!!
Can't help with the veggie question as I don't grow any!
seedlings- you will after a season of growing, get used to the various shaped leaves they have. just wait for 'real' leaves to grow. then you will see what is a weed and what is something you have done. or , you could sow seeds in a pattern, a square or in lines, that way you can tell if something grows in between your lines- it is probably a weed .
There's no contest really. Decorate in winter. This leaves you spring and autumn to work in the garden and summer to sit and enjoy it. Just remember "Gardening forever, housework whenever"
Regards the seedlings, plant in straight lines or blocks then cover the line or block with vermiculite, perlite, or sand. That way you can always tell which are plants and which are weeds.
Oh, I like that saying! Thanks Linda
