How can I get rid of them?
quick way is to dig them out. weedkiller will work but will probably take all summer to do so.
To a point I agree with Darren but it can also depend upon the 'thistle' type.
If it is perennial sow thistle then you have some pain on.
These spread (apart from seed) by root cuttings i.e. if you leave a bit of root in place after digging them out it will re-grow (sometimes with a vengeance)
I have had it on my plot for years and I still can't get rid of it and it is not for the want of trying.
To keep it reasonably under control I hoe it off as it appears.
At least in this way it can't self seed, and I think it becomes weakened and remains quite local i.e. it does not spread too far.
I battled with scotch thistles in a seeded paddock for years. Then I was told to cut them down when in flower- any earlier, they will propagate from the roots. When they are putting their energy in flowering, they will bleed to death. This was eventually successful, and the paddock grass choked them out.
Are they milk thistles? Just an idea ....

Interesting that Euphorbia flourishes amongst thistle.
That particular purging plant not only purges humans but may have a bad effect on the life of thistle too.
it is almost quelling the thistle, where it has seeded itself in the field, a splendid display of the architectural euphorbia, deep amongst the thistle.
