I have a newly constructed Pergola which is north facing but gets morning & evening light from the sides.
I am after some evergreen climbers - it's going to be an evening retreat and alfresco dining area.
I am after a selection of child friendly (i.e. not poisonous) climbers with all year round colour / fragrance.
I would also like the fragrance to be mild and not too overpowering.
I was thinking of a grape vine? They seem quite expensive, if I planted it out in a pot could I cut it down to a few feet and move it with me when the time comes?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Lisa - for your north facing pergola you could try a climbing hydrangea - dark green foliage with little white flowers, not much of a scent - but then neither does a grape vine. Nan x
A grapevine however is not evergreen! Neither is Hydrangea. There are a few evergreen Clematis' that don't seem to overpowering in sent.
Honeysuckle is a possibility for instance Lonicera henryi or semi-evergreen Lonicera 'Hall's Prolific'.
The best evergreen climber is ivy in all its forms; lots of different colours and shapes. athe sent though is not that pleasant but you could solve that by growing a scented climber also.

Hydrangea petiolaris is evergreen I think.
Trachelospermum is a lovely evergreen climber but it does ahve quite a strong perfume .
