Have recently had house extended and now ready to concentrate on fairly large garden. Am happy to get in garden designer - is it better to work with one or perhape choose three and go with the best design(even though this might cost more)

Having been at garden design of my own for about three years now, on a particularly difficult site, I would say that the shrubs and trees and plants that you do have are far more important than the design that you want.

You really have to design around the botanical life that you have got.

Do it little by little, and see it mature.

Garden design is all about big expense and little knowledge of botany.

You know the way to go if you want status and the other way to go if you want the pleasure of practical knowledge.

The setting of a house/bricks and mortar is crucial to the success of it.

    Hi Sarah,

Most of the time the consult will be free of charge, so you could aks many more designers for that.
Also it could be usefull to look around in the neighbourhood and see if there are gardens of which you like the design, and than ask who designed the garden.
Of course you could go about it yourself. If you allready have some mature trees and/or shrubs find out what will go with them etc.
You need to know what the conditions in your garden are: is it facing north, south, east, west, in full sun or partly shade, what soil is it.
After that you look at plants you like and the conditions these plants want.
Buy some books on how to design your own garden and you'll have the satisfaction you did it all yourself.
I do designs for other people overhere in the Netherlands and I have thought myself this way.
I am sure that in Britain there must be lots of people who would help you design your garden and if you have any doubts, just ask for help here at the boards or your local garden centre. We get many people who ask for advice at our nursery.
    Good luck Sarah, Flowerchild
