I have been trying to track down the climbing rose ' Souvenir du docteur Jamain' but without success as I have the perfect spot on a soon to be erected rose arch in a semi shaded position. Does anyone know of a suitable similar climbing rose i.e. similar colour, must have a good perfume, and hopefully readily available.
The rose you are looking for is listed in the David Austin Book.
Dark crimson, superb scent, sounds lovely....

Thank you for your reply - I did know David Austen listed it and I haveseveral of his roses but its a long way from here to travel and I don't think they would post one at this time of year ( I'm too impatient to wait til next autumn) so was hoping there was another rose with similar qualities here in mid Cheshire but I may have to travel to Shropshire if not.
Crocus sell it in 4 litre pots but have sold out. You could phone and ask David Austin if they have any in pots.
Failing that, Guninée is good for a shady site and has the colour and perfume you seek. I had one growing very successfully on a north facing wall until we had an exceptionally cold winter in 2009 (-32C at its worst and very cold for weeks). I lost a neighbouring New Dawn the same year and most of a Kiftsgate in full sun.
I've replaced my Guninée with a David Austin Falstaff which has come through this last winter just fine so should cope with anything Cheshire can throw at it. It'll never get as big as Dr Jamain or Guinée but that's OK for me.

Thank you Obelixx - I tried David Austen but they have sold out til next autumn - however I noticed they recommended Falstaff as an alternative and think I shall go for that. It looks as though it may do the job as you say so just need to track one down locally if possible.
Just a suggestion - climbing Ena Harkness?

Just a suggestion - climbing Ena Harkness?Ìý Thank you - yes, I have this variety elsewhere in the garden ( my name is Ena so it was a must-have anyway!) I have now ordered Falstaff from the internet so am hoping it will do the job. Thanks for all your replies everyone.
