I was thinking the other day that maybe one of these plastic storage boxes might be used as a cold frame. Has anyone tried this?
I think it should do the trick and it would probably be quite cheap.
Great lateral thinking. I think it would work if you replaced the lid with a bit of glass or clear plastic. If you could angle it towards the sun and make a sloping inner floor to ensure the pots are vertical. Go for it. Cheers, Tony.
Why would it need a sloping inner floor? Why angling it towards the sun if the box is transparent?
Just to get as much light as you can. The plastic may be nearly clear, but the substance may just exclude the waveband / wavelength of light the plants need most. Cheers, Tony.
I've not tried it myself, but i've seen the storage boxes you can roll under the bed used with great success. Not being quite as high as the ones you were looking at might help in gaining maximum sunlight.
Oh the link I used was merely illustratory and not one I was planning to use. Saw some cheap low ones that were totally transparent that I might try.
Some good ideas on this thread, food for thought, thank you.
there is transparent and transparent.
diyplas (search) has graded plastic for all household and garden purposes and you have to get the micron dimension down as low as possible for it to be of real use in the garden. The UVi (Ultra violet index?) is crucial.
