    Hi All,
Well in the passed we've had a few remarks ref is it really worth gardening,
Why not make life simple and just go to the local supermarket and buy the veg/fruit/flowers?

Well this thread is headed "Inspiration" and as i see it the idea is to do just that, give both the newer and us older garden people thoughts and ideas as to making the garden worth while and interesting,

So if you've the time to read this one all the way through ? I'll show you why i for one keep on doing the garden and like to share my ideas with you and get some good ideas back in return.

So here goes, As we're all being told the world is changing, the weather, & manmade ideas seem to be falling apart ie people are starting to say we dont want nuclear anything,

Like the plants we humans need water, air & food plus light and if in any part of the world we start having all kinds of radio active leakage into the sea's / the air, & on the food we grow then we're in trouble deep, and of cause we're never really sure of what we're being told ref how safe the imported food is.

Just ask yourself why is it that bannahs dont last in the fruit bowl for more than a few days before they're going black?
When i was a kid they lasted a lot longer,

If ever you needed any Inspiration as to grow your own, then times like we're getting now must help you make up your mind that when you grow your own at the very least you know whats gone into the feeding and growing of the veg/fruit .

The prices we're asked to pay these days for our food is bad enough and we're never to sure from week to week the cost of fuel & this very item (petrol diesil) is another factor as to the cost of the food chain,

Again more good sound reason to grow your own.

I remember when in the U.K we had the fuel strike and people started to use feet, cycle and the roads just didnt have the traffic on them and many people said it was nicer than the normal traffic noise, fumes etc.

I wonder if we're heading for the old ways of getting about?
Would it be better to have the horse ploughing the fields, the holidays spent in the uk doing the camping, YMCA's holidays?

Gardening is'nt new and even during the second world war land was used by those who didnt like gardening, ie the Air raid shelters in a lot of towns and villages we're put up by the house owners in the back gardens and once again the land became a life saver and people did grow what they could.

Maybe we're heading for what goes round comes round,?

Short story ref the Anderson shelter,

London during the blitz, the sirens we're started and every one knew the best place tobe was the air raid shelters,
One old couple started to run down the street "the man was a little bit ahead of his wife" as he looked over his shoulder he could see she'd turned round and was heading back to their home!

He shouted to her " We're the bl---y hell do you think your going "he asked"

Ive left me teeth on the kitchen table she said!

Husband replied they're dropping bl---y bombs woman "not sandwiches".

So our land was a life saver even to those who didnt grow food even then.

This is your Inspiration to grow your own if possible.

Oh Punpun, how we've missed your comments but you are sooooo right, there has been low level Radiation been picked up in Glasgow and Oxford that has come from Japan so what next will come over and what will happen in the air and seas.

Your joke is class, love it , and I'm growing my own albeit on a small scale like cabbage, cauliflowers, sprouts and I have strawberries, gooseberries and blackberries and 4 fruit trees, apple, plum, pear and cherry.

Now then Punpun, you're back and already you are making me feel guilty about what I DON'T do. Was going to grow some veggie this year. The mind was willing, but the body didn't seem to follow suit. So, here I am, back to where I was last year. Still just talking about it.

Perhaps next year. It's so good to have you back.

    Hi to both of you,
Well i'll start with the armchair gardener, Kit,
You said last year you'd do some off the chair & out in the fresh air gardening,?

I was thinking to myself "Yes Kit " will be eating better, feeling fitter, and saving a bomb by growing her own, people would see this wonderful women gardening and the post man would need more space for next valentines days mail to your house, secrete admiring men taking up jogging passed your place just to get a look at kit's veg.

Kit! It's not to late you can still get started gardening or turn the table round and take up jogging, you'd be amazed how many men are out in the garden most evenings and the best chat up line is to ask them "Hi i was just looking at your plums ! did you grow them yourself , are they all your own work,?

If it's the last thing i do Im going to get you gardening .

    Hi Rain,
It's nice to talk to you again,
Ive said it before and i'll say it again you cant go far wrong with friut, But you've not said anything ref growing early spuds?

Here is a very work shy way to get a good crop for little effort, all you do is get some black polythene and decide your growing area clear it of any grass/weeds etc but dont be to fussy, Now lay the black polythene over the complete growing area and cut crosses in the polythene spaced about two foot apart and then just place one seed potatoe under the polythene and in time the spuds will start to grow, they will grow without any soil being over them and all you have to look for is the flowers opening (these will grow through the holes you cut out) once the flowers have died just pull the polythene off the soil and you'll have a good crop ready for gathering and cooking.

It's the polythene that keeps the seed potatoes warm and speeds up the growing.

Well, the op certainly hasn't dampened your humour Punpun. I do garden, but just haven't got round to growing veg. I certainly won't be taking up jogging, so I better get digging.

I tried growing spuds last year in a bag and ground just as a test, they grew wonderful, kept topping the bags up and earthing up as the foliage grew, then they flowered and I thought ready for cropping but there was nothing there no spuds at all so not growing them this time as I was rather p****d off with them, I was gutted and as I've had a little move round in the garden I don't have room to put the bag and the ground has other things in, but I like to try different things so I might have another go next year, Thanks for the info though I shall bear that in mind.

    Hi Kit,
We've changed rolls ref the who's doing what in the garden & im like a film director, I sit there pointing and giving out the orders.

Today she's managed to run the mower off the lawn, (It's not my fault) she shouted at me "How the hell are you supposed to see the grass in front of you that needs cutting??????

And then she said the lawn mowers got a fault "my pride and joy"

    What fault i asked?
Everytime i stand up to get a better view of the grass im to cut the engine packs up,
But when i sit down again it jerks back into action!
(It's a saftey device i replied incase you get knocked off the mower)

Well if you have all these daft devices on it how come you cant see the grass infront of you???????????????

(I didnt like to say you look at the sides of the skirt to judge your distance)

But your correct kit, I wouldnt have her anyother way.
