Hello
I have a spot in my north facing border that I would like to fill with honeysuckle.
I would like as sweet as smelling honeysuckle as possible, will it still smell if it isnt getting much sun?
I am drawn to belgica and serotina because I like the purple pink colour, I am thinking of planting them 1 foot apart so that they grow together as they have different flowering times - does this sound like a good plan?
I do think someone once recommended a variety called red gables but I cant find it anywhere, but I would appreciate any other recommendations partiularly for varities that are of a purple hue
many thanks
Lonicera periclymenum Belgica should do well in shade and will provide perfume in May and June followed by berries in autumn.
You could continue the display with clematis Betty Corning which flowers from July to September and whose flowers have a delicate perfume close up - I have one and she's very hardy.
Clematis montana Elizabeth and/or Grandiflora will also provide spring perfume but don't plant close to Betty corning as they have very different pruning regimes.
There are also perfumed roses suited to northerly aspects - Guinée, Zephirine Drouhin, Souvenir de Dr Jamain and so on.
