Hi Does anyone have any suggestions for low growing evergreens. I have several heucheras and love them but could use something of a similar size to give all year interest in a bare place.
Geranium macrorhizum forms stay evergreen except in the hardest of winters. Their leaves often turn a bright red too for added interest and they flower in late spring.
Bergenias are another good plant with green or purple foliage and pink or white flowers in late winter, early spring.
Hellebores come in various colours of flowers from creamy white through to deep purpley black. They are evergreen but the old foliage needs to be cut back to reveal the flowers and reduce disease. They flower any time from Christmas to Easter depending on variety and the foliage then provides a good back drop to other plants the rest of the year.
How about some euonymous - variegated in different colours, or pulmonaria, interesting foliage and little blue/pink flowers in early Spring ?? Nan x
Thanks, I forgot to say its a shady spot, will these plants still be OK?
The ones I mentioned all cope with semi or full shade.
Euonymous fortunei gives its best foliage colours in full sun but copes with dappled shade. Pulmonaria dies back in winter but does cope with shade.
