    Hi All,
Hope your feeling that buzz in the air as we get started in the garden,

I was talking to some new friends who have moved here to france and like myself they've taken early retirement and the husband was saying that he really thinks he may have made a mistake buying a french house with such an large over grown garden. (two acres)

As we talked a bit more he said he was put off gardening when he tried to have a nice very small garden when they lived in the uk,
He continued that with working 5 days a week and then being tired out by the week end he' found gardening one hell of a head-ache,

If the weather was bad he couldnt do anything and by the next weekend the lawn was over growing and the flowers beds we're looking more weeds than flowers.

This is a very common problem ive come across for years now and its the lack of understanding the best garden for you and your time you can spend in the garden,

It's all very good wanting the perfect lawn and perfect bedding are's if you have the time to keep on top of them, if your going to do the work yourself that is.

Some times its a better idea to look at all the verious sorts of garden's you could have that look nice but need a lot less time spent on them,

Shrubs are a less time spent kind of gardening,
apart from the keeping them clipped (in some cases) and fed/watered they tend to grow at their own pace , flower at approx the same time for that shrub every year, and by having verious shrubs that come into their own (ie flower or in full leave) at verious times of the season ! You can have a nice looking garden and a little more time to do other things in the garden if you wish,
But if you make the mistake of wanting a garden that has flowering bulbs etc that once they've finished flowering require moving or you're finding you have soil looking at you (a place weeds are taking over) then you will need time and hope the weather is on your side when your home ready to garden.

One of my neighbours back in the uk only had a lawn and the borders just had heathers in them, his garden always looked tidy and the lawn was always cut neat,.(He was in a wheelchair) and so his garden plan worked very well for him and his wife.

It's the old story plan to get it right dont plan and get it wrong.

If you have a lot of soil showing the chances are you'll have a lot of weeds.

By using bark etc you can again keep weeds under some sort of order,
And if you really want to see lots of flowers & no weeds then large urns/ troughs etc may be the answer as if any weeds should get into these places you can remove them quickly.
After all a weed is just a plant you dont want in your garden.
