Lidl have Magnolias advertised for next week. I would really like to buy one. The problem I have is realistically I have clay (although quite a light one), acidic soil and I live in the frozen North of Aberdeen. What are the chances of it surviving, they're expensive and a waste of money if a good frost would kill it!
Many Thanks :o)
A brief search reveals that some varieties are hardy and others are not so hardy.
Up state NY growers would have similar experiences to yourself except their summers can be hotter. They certainly have the mountainous cold up there!
I have a magnolia soulangiana on a slightly acidic clay soil. I think this magnolia is quite tolerant of many soil types.
The tree itself is quite hardy, meaning I don't think it'll die on you. The problem is is that it's an early flowering tree so some years you'l be lucky, other years the flowers and first leaves may well suffer frost damage.
Maybe there are types which flower later (in fact I'm sure there are).
The soulangiana will tolerate some shade, so if you can plant it in an area where it gets some kind of natural frost protection by another tree, all the better.
I echo that the tree is hardy, but the flowers, being early, are susceptible to being frosted & end up staying on the tree, but all brown- not a pretty sight.
I'd certainly do some research on which are the hardiest varieties & then try & check it out before you buy. But, knowing Lidl's prices, it wont cost the earth & you may be lucky. J.
They are £8.99 which is a bargain for a magnolia but an expensive dead twig! I can live with brown flowers some years though so if that's the worst that can happen I imagine it's worth a punt.
They have "red", "pink" and "white" varieties. You've got to love Lidls, you never know quite what you're going to get!
Is this a nationwide promotion or just in Aberdeen? Can't find any info about it on the Lidl site.
Nationwide K-J
I could be wrong, but if the magnolias are the ones in the pictures then I'd guess,
left to right : a soulangeana, lilliflora "susan", and a stellata.
Thanks Margaretstar!
Which ones for a plot in Aberdeenshire?
well.......I have no experience on Aberdeenshire, but this site suggests stellata.
(though also seemingly not succesful for some)
