    Hi all,
Well santa's been sacked for another year and apart from January 1st the spending spree is almost over and things should get back to normal,

ie no more threatening the kids they'll get nothing off santa if he hears you being cheeky,

No more hints of "Oh thats just what i could do with" hint hint hint???

    So lets talk gardening,
The weather here in France has been very cold over the last few days but nothing like the U.K has had to put up with,
on Monday and up until yesterday we had about 3 inch of snow, but this morning a little mist and that very fine rain and all the snows gone,

    And am i glad,
I dont think for one minute we've seen the last of the snow "but" we're having a little break for now anyway.

Im getting the toms seeds ready plus the geranium seeds for sowinging in my home made miniture covered hot house, its a frame made of wood and glass covering heat warming soil cable,

    I like o sow these seeds on the 1st of january;

I start the early seeds off in the workshop near the window and the temp is kept at (55/60 degrees) under this self build warm house.

Warming cables or as some people call them "heat" cables are a good worth while buy, and last for years.

Most plants like bottom heat and this is a very good way to provide it and it's an indoor way of gardening so it's not that important ref whats the weather's like out doors as you can still garden this way.

Ive an african violet plant that sits on the kitchen window ledge and it's been growing for about 4 years now,
these plants i find enjoy the odd drink of cold tea , like a lot of hairy leaved house plants only water the compost and not the leaves.

If you've the space (indoors) you can sow lettuce in pots and enjoy them during the winter,

winter is a condition that happens outside, if you really want to grow and you can provide the conditions inside?
You'll be amazed just how much you can grow during the winter.

Hi punpun - We are past the shortest day of the year, but with the weather as it is I'm going to delay any sowing of seeds until February. The reason I am saying this is I only have two small heated propagators. Fine for germination, but once outside the warmth of the propagator the seedlings will simply mark time until the warmer weather is here.

As you are living in France conditions may be more favourable to earlier sowings, but in UK we still have low winter temps. Good luck with your tomato sowings, but it's my guess that we will both be harvesting at the same time next year (despite my later sowing).

I've sown some perennials, a flat of Pansy's,and Dracaena.
I also sow my Geranium seeds Jan.1. Actually I have my sowing dates for everything marked on a calendar. Over here our last frost date is around the last week of May so Tomatoes I won't sow until March. Everything is moved into the greenhouse in March when I turn the heat on, but I still do my propagating in my basement since I can control the environment there much better than in the greenhouse.

You know me PunPun, a fair weather gardener. Not into all this grow-your-own lark. Might try something when the weather's a bit better by which time, it will probably be too late!

Just wanted to say that I hope you had a good Christmas with your family, albeit that it's a distant memory now, and I wish you a very happy, prosperous and healthy New Year.

    Hi Kit,
Well first thanks for your new years greetings and as you know i say it as it is and so i need say only to you if nothing else has come along out of the blue during 2010 it's you,
And am i pleased to have made a friend of you.

It's nearly the end of this year, No more kids asking "how many more sleeps until santa calls,
And what if i cant go to sleep, Will he still leave me toys??

The verious changes throughout the year that effected us "like the forum changes, But when you read the papers and see what some people have to put up with it only makes you think that we have no good reason to complain.
( But niether did the admin to get rid of the potting shed)

And now we're all a year older and i hope wiser and the things we know are important in life dont have a price tag on them,
All that really matters is to live life to the full & the best way you can without hurting anyone.

I really do live for my gardening and the animals both the few i own and the ones i dont own but are within seeing distance & feeding distance.

So Kit, a very very good year to you and all thats dear to you and i look forward to our chats next year.

Be good and dont you change one little bit your perfect just as you are.
    Regards PUNPUN;

Thank you so much for your kind words PunPun. Your right about being another year older as it's my birthday tomorrow and I just keep telling myself, it's only a number! Not too sure if I am convincing myself of that though.

I do like my gardening, but am not as dedicated as you. Perhaps I will try to do better next year.

I agree with you that when you listen to the news, which is awful here at the moment, young men killing each other, a young woman murdered before Christmas and, somewhat less serious but devasting for those affected, the lack of water in Ireland then, yes, we do have a lot to be thankful for.

Look forward to chatting more next year.
