i use a lot of household waste peelings etc. i was wondering if banana skins
were alright to use

Banana skins are rich in phosphorous and potash and help to make excellent compost.
There's a fascinating book, that you can read on Google books, that tells you about the composting value of just about every conceivable fruit and vegetable:
