    Hello,

Recently considering to plant a Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku'. Any suggestions as when to plant?

RHS's advice on when to plant a tree indicates between Oct to Apr (for bare root). Not sure if this applies to this small Acer tree in a 3 L (30 cm dia.) pot.

    Thanks

    Bryan

Planting it now would be good, as long as the ground is not frozen solid.
Dig the hole at least as big as the pot.
Chop the the bottom of the planting hole, to loosen the soil, this allows the roots to work their way into the earth.
Put a handful of bonemeal into the planting hole, and shuffle it in to blend with the soil.
If you are going to stake the tree, put the stake in at this stage.(Banging the stake in later on can damage the roots if it goes through them.)
Tip the Acer out of its pot, and tease the roots loose, just a bit. (not so much that you lose all the soil off the roots.)
Plant the Acer in the hole at the same depth that it was in the pot. It doesn`t do the tree any good to be planted with the soil coming right up its stem.
Back fill with soil, and tread down to firm it in. Tie the stake.
Water well, even if its raining, as the water not only waters the tree, but it also washes the soil down around the roots.
