One of my real pleasures in recent years is visiting Open Gardens under the Yellow Book scheme, plus other Charitable organizations.
It is lovely to see what other gardeners achieve.
A wonderful chance to pick up tips, see what plants do well. & as other gardeners are always willing to share knowledge, I've always learned something and come away with ideas that I have used in my own garden.
Never be too proud to ask, it can save money, time and patience.
Plus, there is nearly always lovely cakes and tea available! And plants on sale at really good prices. It is a cheap afternoon out. The priciest part is fuel, we try to share cost with a couple of friends..

    Hi.
Where I live,(well my mum),we have an open garden weekend every other year in June.It is alternated with the next village. It is our turn next year, and hopefully we will be able to have ours open again. We,ve done it twice, and it is very rewarding to hear such positive comments on all your hard work. Its exhausting though,we had over a hundred visitors each day.If at all possible,I try to nip off to see some of the other gardens that are open,(usually around 20/25).One of the most common responses is wow, you,d never guess this was here behind this house, never quite sure how to interpret that.

I must confess I`ve never visited an open garden, but the idea of it sounds wonderful.
I`ll put it on my something-nice-to-do list.

My parents' village used to do it very successfully as a joint venture. Then one year there was a spate of thefts from gardens, so they abandoned it. Such a shame - I'm not convinced the thefts had anything to do with the open days!

Take it as it was meant, they probably found a little hidden gem!
I have had it said about my garden several times when I have opened it for the village.
One of the down sides of living in a terrace, is that the garden is tucked away out of sight.
Of course, the up-side is that it is out of view of those who would perhaps get some pleasure in causing damage or lifting treasured plants.

Visiting Yellow Book gardens is one of my favourite activities, for all the resons given in the OP. As well as the chance to see inspirational gardens, the invariably delicious home-made cakes make for a wonderdul afternoon out.
