I manage a garden for a school teacher who likes to give her children posies on their Birthday but as of yet were stumped for the children in Jan and feb?
I know there are alot of shrubs with winter interest but does anyone have any ideas for plants that could provide something for a posy or two during the very early part of the year to tide us over till the first Snowdrop.
Thank-you
Could you use narcissus or crocus plants? The one I have on the windowsill usually flower in Jan/Feb. Or perhaps the flower from an early flowering Camelia. I believe there are verities that flower in jan. And if all fails. Can the posies be raised from seeds indoors/greenhouse/coldframe?
you could try helleborus niger, iris reticulata, and a variety of daffodil called Rijnveld's early sensation. When we drive through FIL's place for the xmas visit (in the southwest) its a mark of how mild the winter has been if the daffs are out or not. Last year they weren't flowering, but the previous 2 christmas's they were just starting to open. Alternatively you could force some bulbs for the purpose.
It could also serve as a good lesson for the children if you were to get them to do it.

Rijnveld's early sensation great idea mine flowers fron dec till jan in a warm year , if cold mid jan -till late feb its not as cheap as other daff bulbs , and the plant i sightly shorter 3ocm ,
I would look at planting some Christmas Box (Sarcococca hookeriana humilis)if you would like something to cut. It smells wonderful and lasts about 3 days inside.
If you are wanting small dainty plants then try some Cyclamen Coum. They survive quite well in pots and flower from December till April.
Sown from seed now they will flower next year.
A heather called Springwood White flowers throughout the winter months.
